What Is GEO? Generative Engine Optimization Explained

SEO, AIO, GEO — the alphabet soup around findability is growing fast. The newest and most widely adopted term is GEO: Generative Engine Optimization. It describes exactly what businesses need today: optimizing for generative engines — systems like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude that don’t show a list of links, but generate an answer.

Why a new term?

Classic SEO optimizes for a ranking: position 1 to 10 in Google. Generative engines don’t have positions. They have answers — and your business is either part of the answer or it isn’t. That changes the game:

  • From clicks to citations. Success is no longer “ranking #3” but “being named or cited in the answer.”
  • From keywords to meaning. Language models match concepts and entities, not exact search terms.
  • From one engine to many. Google was the only game in town; now visibility spreads across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini and voice assistants — each with its own sources and preferences.

What determines whether AI cites you?

Research into generative engines consistently points to a handful of factors:

  1. Clear, quotable statements. Generative engines prefer text they can lift directly: concrete facts, numbers, definitions and step-by-step explanations.
  2. Entities and specificity. Vague marketing language is invisible to AI. Named products, places, certifications and industries are hooks an engine can grab.
  3. Structured data. Schema markup makes your facts machine-readable and verifiable.
  4. Authority and consistency. Being mentioned consistently across multiple trusted sources (directories, industry sites, news) strengthens the model’s confidence in your business.
  5. Unique information. Engines love sources that add something new — original data, real experience, local knowledge that isn’t on ten other sites.

GEO and SEO: not either/or

Good news: GEO doesn’t replace SEO — it builds on it. A technically healthy, fast, crawlable website with strong content remains the foundation. Generative engines still lean heavily on classic search indexes to find their sources. The difference is the layer on top: content written for comprehension and citation, entities instead of empty slogans, and measurement of your visibility in AI answers instead of only your Google positions.

Where to start?

Start by measuring. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the questions your customers ask, and check: are you in the answer? Is your competitor? Which sources do the engines cite?

That baseline tells you exactly where the work is. And it’s precisely what our free AI scan delivers: a snapshot of your current visibility in generative engines, plus the most impactful next steps.
